Observations on e-commerce trends in France
Amazon remains the undisputed leader of e-commerce

Among the major online store in France, Amazon continues to stand out due to its dominant market share. Although it was not specifically mentioned in our recent data, the site continues to have a crushing presence in the French market. Just like in Canada, Amazon remains the leader in terms of sales volume and continues to rank among the largest sources of revenue for online commerce in France.
Variability of the average basket and consumption trends:

An interesting observation from the data on the average basket is the wide disparity between stores, ranging from €17 on Vinted to €110 on Cdiscount. This variation is linked to the nature of the products offered by each site. For instance, sites like Vinted, which focus on selling second-hand clothing, attract buyers looking for good deals, which is reflected in a relatively low average basket. Conversely, Cdiscount, which mainly sells electronics, home equipment, and fashion, records a high average basket, with often more substantial purchases.
This difference in average basket shows that it is possible to achieve significant revenues even with modest average baskets. For example, Vinted generates €500 million despite a relatively low average basket (between €17 and €22 depending on gender), while Cdiscount records €800 million in turnover with an average basket of €110, higher but also more typical of online purchases in categories like electronics and home appliances.
A trend towards higher average baskets:
Sites like Showroomprivé and Cdiscount also show that higher average baskets are often associated with larger quantity purchases or more expensive products. The average basket on Showroomprivé reaches €51.5, which is quite high considering its model based on private sales, while giants like Cdiscount or Zalando see a similar average basket of €60.8, reflecting a certain stability in consumption, even for platforms that are not specialized in luxury products.
Conclusion on trends:
The variability of average baskets shows that the French e-commerce landscape landscape is extremely diverse and that different strategies can be effective depending on market segments. While some sites, like Vinted, target consumers seeking good deals with a lower average basket, others, like Cdiscount, succeed in maintaining higher baskets thanks to a more diverse product offering. These trends reveal that despite differences in purchasing habits, it is possible to achieve impressive online performances, regardless of the average basket.
